Training

Often, it is not possible to see on the outside how someone feels on the inside. You see the actions of the person, but you cannot read their thoughts. Virtual Reality can be used for all forms of behavioural change, for example creating understanding and empathy.

A 360-degree film in combination with VR glasses provides the opportunity to increase the understanding for people with an eating disorder.  For instance, we developed a Virtual Reality application to allow parents and therapists to experience the feeling of a patient. The effect of Virtual Reality was immediately noticeable through emotional and sympathetic responses.

Sarah: The war I was fighting on the inside was destroying me.

UNDERSTANDING AND EMPATHY

"The war I was fighting on the inside was destroying me. No matter how hungry I was, I had to keep my schedule. I knew that everyone around me wanted to help me, but because they did not understand my feelings and could not read my mind, they often did not really get what I truly needed", says Sarah, who is recovering from an eating disorder.

"I wish I had seen this video before, as we would probably have understood each other much sooner and better, and said that we had to do something about it. Find help and stop fighting", says Sarah's father.

The effect of Virtual Reality was immediately noticeable when parents, therapists and (former) patients experienced the patient's feelings. For example, there were many emotional, sympathetic responses and that is exactly the behavioural change we aimed to bring about.
